11th step for access to education in Anatolia

World Human Relief is opening its 11th school as part of the projects it carries out to increase access to education in Anatolia.
The World Human Relief Association, a non-governmental organization that works to raise awareness of society against violence and trauma and to strengthen individuals and society with mental health projects for everyone, with the belief that poverty and violence can be overcome with education, is preparing to open its 11th village school that will serve 240 students as part of the Sustainable Education in Disadvantaged Regions Project.

HATAY, (DHA)- World Human Solidarity Association (WHR) opened the International Trauma Prevention and Rehabilitation Center (UTÖMER) in Hatay. The center aims to make trauma-focused psychological support accessible to those affected by the February 6 earthquakes.

At UTÖMER HATAY, located in Antakya, 5 trauma specialist psychologists and 1 social worker will serve children, adolescents and adults. In addition to working at the center, the teams will also go to villages and carry out mental health support activities.

Many buildings collapsed in Kahramanmaraş, Kilis, Diyarbakır, Adana, Osmaniye, Gaziantep, Malatya and Hatay. Thousands of people lost their lives and hundreds of thousands of people were injured. Search and rescue efforts continue in the wreckage.

The earthquake negatively affected children both physically and psychologically. Experts underline the need for proper communication, especially with children.

Knowing first aid techniques saves lives, we saw this again in the last earthquake we experienced. We asked experts about the basic principles of both physical and psychological first aid. We recommended courses to those who want to receive training.

Volunteers of the “Disaster Platform”, formed by many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the earthquake region, organize the aid materials sent to Hatay Expo Fair Area by trucks and trailers from all over Turkey.

Approximately 200 volunteers working under the coordination of AFAD deliver the aid packages they prepared according to the need list to earthquake victims living in rural areas and tent cities.

Volunteers prepare aid packages by meticulously sorting the materials that arrive in approximately 15 trucks and trailers daily, and deliver aid to at least 300 families every day.

Experts also provide psychosocial support to earthquake victims.

World Human Solidarity Association (World Human Relief) Aydın Provincial Coordinator, Psychologist Ayşe Gülin Pakatcı, talked about the #Say Something activity that took place between 9-12 January as part of the ‘Break the Darkness’ project. Pakatcı said that sexual abuse to children and families is a silent epidemic by making brochures and information; “If your child doesn’t know what sexual violence is, how can he know if he or she has been subjected to this violence?” she said.

The founding president of the association, Assoc. Ayten Zara stated that they will establish a “Mobile Village Institute” in addition to the school in the region and said, “The name of the village is Happy, but they are not happy. There were 200, 30 children who were deprived of education. Girls who were not sent to school. I convinced their families. Now they can go to school too.”
